Lecture 1:
14.04.2020 (Week 1)

Mr.Mike gave an over all of the MIB and our tasks. After the elaborate explanation and we formed our groups and decided on the project each team wanted to work for from the given options. For the Minor project, we are collaborating with computer science students and creating a product or a service for our chosen client.

INSTRUCTIONS

WORK

Week 1
1. Please describe what is Design Innovation based on the article "What is Design Innovation? by Alex Obenauer". Please cite some examples to elaborate your observations.

https://medium.com/newindustrialist/what-is-design-innovation-89fb307462ae

ANSWER:
An innovative design is a design that goes through, as Alex Obenauer describes, rigorous, empathetic and interactive design process which fundamentally innovates a concept and or an idea which improves the interactivity to its customers. A design that
For example, Mail Pilot, which does not just show "read" or "unread" your mail. It allows notifications for bills that are due, shows "incomplete" or "complete", which allows users to use it as a reminder to complete their tasks, serving multi purpose of mail service, rather than just reading mails. These new features are innovative designs that interact with the users more. It makes the old email services better, it is not a replacement, it is simply a better more interactive and highly functional service.

2.Please watch this documentary about Design Disruptors and write a short essay about what are Design Disruptors with cited examples.

ANSWER

A disruptive designer creates something that disrupts the normal and implements solutions that solves larger issues in a creative way. Disruptors are people who cease to take impossible tasks and follow their instincts even if it means colouring outside the line. Develop ideas and things that are out of norm and form new developments and paths and bring innovation. It's a technique that activates sustainability principles through creative practice. They look at problems from different angels and bring breakthroughs to solving issues that can be sustainable and solves social issues. "Disruption is confidence in work", a designer or a developer that believes they can find a solution to a problem that seems impossible to solve. They are inventors of new things that disrupt the existing rules in a way that solves larger issues. They are innovators that tackle problems with their designs and ideas. It's a unique method of evolving and solving complex issues and providing sustainable solutions through design.

They look at problems and try to solve them with new technologies. Looking at existing industry and improving it, doing it better, simply and solving issues.  For example as mentioned in the video, designers solved the issue of decreasing the amount of cars on streets, by introducing  applications such as Uber that can get you rides, which allows cars to travel to directly where it is supposed to be and decrease the amount of taxis on the road looking for people hailing for a ride. Addition to that, the introduction of facebook reaction emojis are also part of a disruptive design process. Disruptive designers work in different ways, creating something that attracts customers, creating customer satisfaction, as seen from the video, just a simple high five animation after an email has been sent, customer satisfaction increased drastically. likewise, Apple is a disruptive company that re designed the use of mobile phones. They created disruptive designs with new technology and this became huge. Bringing together people with their designs. Disruptors choose not to play by the rules and Apple was a company that changed the face of mobile phones.

This week my group mates and I started developing a proposal idea by doing some research into Hilti and the repair process.
Below is the information we gathered and the proposal ideas we had.

Week 2
This week after consulting Mr.Mike and receiving feedback from the computing team, it was made aware that Hilti in-fact might not need our input and therefore our group might be disbanded.

I managed to join group 10 for Petrosains. The client meeting was pending and therefor we did not have much to do this week.I joined this group this week and I like how things are organised and overall I think the group has a pretty unified ideation process and shared input and works very well together. Looking forward to the meeting with the client and hoping to get the chosen location all of our group members are familiar and interested to work with. Finalising our idea and moving on to getting our roles needs to be done as soon as possible so that each of us can start researching and learning the necessary skill

Week 3
This week we had a client meeting with all other groups tasked with Petrosains project as well. After the client meeting, tasks were given our roles. I was to work on fossil casting. Sangeetha, me and Azmina are developing all assets and incharge of art direction.

Week 4
This week we received the content for both the activities of Geotime Diorama. Below are the contents.

After getting the content, I started working on the storyboard. I finished the fossil casting storyboard on Photoshops and below is my work process.
Storyboard process

Week 5
This week I started developing my first draft of assets. Below are my first work.
After getting feedback, we decided on changing colors. I also gave a go at creating the UI.

Week 6
My work for this week are below. This week I completed the whole storyboard and below is the storyboard complete.

Colors were still an issue and therefore we decided to change it right before the client presentation and this was my work in progress and getting UI also together for the presentation.

This week we presented our proposal to our clients. Below is our client proposal.
Proposal

Week 7
After the client meeting, I worked more on the colors as per Mr.Mikes request below are my work.
After a lot of drafts, Mr.Mike chose 1 draft and I started developing all the final assets.

Week 8
This week I finished all the assets and below are my work progress.

Week 9
This week I finished compiling the final storyboard with the UI, below is my work.

FINAL UI

Week 10
This week I made, small changes but most of our part was done and we were waiting for Sangeetha to finish up animations so we can do the final finishing and compile the video.

Week 11
This week I did the final animation video works after Sangeetha sent the file. Adding the voice over and music and combining all the clips. And the final would be exported. below are my processes.

Week 12
We still had minor issues with the voice over therefor Aaron helped us edit the voice over and sent us the file. I re edited the work on after effects and rendered the final version.
Added all finals to the Miro Board

Week 13
After sending all the files, we were informed that we needed extra buttons for animation video and therefor I created them, below is my process.
Finished work complied on Miro

Week 14
This week all our work has been complete and below is our final presentation with the final video and game.

PITCH DECK SUBMISSION

REFLECTIONS

Week 1
We were not given a clear brief on what exactly was expected of us and therefore we focused on gathering as much information as we can and be prepared or any ideas that could be recommended by the clients. We are still not sure of when we will have a meeting with the client.
Week 2
I joined this group this week and I like how things are organized and overall I think the group has a pretty unified ideation process and shared input and works very well together. Looking forward to the meeting with the client and hoping to get the chosen location all of our group members are familiar and interested to work with. Finalising our idea and moving on to getting our roles needs to be done as soon as possible so that each of us can start researching and learning the necessary skills.
Week 3
The switched to unity was interesting as I would be able to see how it works hopefully and excited to see how our progression goes by. This week we decided I will be part of the development of the content itself, the design aspect, the art direction and animation. It will be tough for the animation part, but it will be fun to explore the different ways we can adapt our ideas with animations.
Week 4
It is becoming more organized and we have more of an understanding of which task we need to get done and we are collaborating with computer science people better. It feels good to know we have our idea set. However, changing the quiz to another game or activity is another thing we have to brainstorm on and we need to do a little bit more research on this.
Week 5
The proposed new activity was approved and we were able to develop on the UI. The preparation for the proposal was still pending and I still had to make changes to the assets I developed. We need to find a way to adjust the colors and show it brighter by using petrosians colors in a neon palette , which is gonna be interesting if executed well, so I am looking forward to what it will look like with the UI and everything finalized. The 3d space looks very nice and very excited to see our final outcome.
Week 6
Our proposal received very little to no feedback and this was unsettling as I was not sure if we were going in the right direction or if there were any changes to be made. The assets although still had some issues with the colors and style. Mr.Mike wanted to really try using the outline style and I was advised to try and make it work. I was unsure of how the outline would work since our references were different, but we had a reference given by Mr.mike and I could use that. It seemed like despite that and the UI finalization we were on the right track.
Week 7
The fossils casting colors were approved today and it was a relief after working on it for almost three weeks to finally get a grasp on it. Mr. Mike chose one from all the variations I made and he decided to go with the outline version. I am unsure of how this style would fit with the other illustrations from Sangeetha and Azmina. We might have different looks with our given tasks, but hoping we can make some changes and find a balancing ground. Liquefaction colors still need to be adjusted and I am looking forward to seeing some balance with our art direction so we can finalize it and move on to the animation. The UI still has issues and we need to make sure it works on full screen and start testing how it will work.
Week 8
This week I worked on a few samples for the UI however we decided to go with some of the original designs and make extra changes to those. The development of the UI was something we overlooked and we are having a tough time with it as we did not decide on our approach at the early stages. Despite this, the final stages of the UI are coming together. The more I look at it the more I realize that we are very limited in using the petrosains colors. We turn to petrosains colors for the UI however it is failing to stand out as the colors are a bit dull. Since we did not use the colors for the assets our art direction at its last stages are implementing more petrosains colors. This usage of colors is what is giving me and azmina a bit of a tough time. There is also some discussions of having the need for animations for game.
Week 9
Our final designs were approved and now the finishing touches are the only parts pending from mine and Azmina’s side. Sangeetha has finished the animatics and it looks good. Excited to see the final animations. Most of the major parts of my tasks are done by now, however there are still possibly animations to do. The past few weeks were a bit overwhelming as I was having a tough time with the colors. Fossil casting also had a lot more assets than I had originally thought and although it was time consuming to play around with the colors for the assets separately and add outlines in different colors, the outcome certainly looks better than before
Week 10
Our files for the game and UI are ready to be handed over, however we still need to consult the computing team how that would go about. We will be arranging a meeting with them to discuss and if our game functions are doable for them. We also need to clarify if there are any additional files we have to hand over for them to do their part smoothly.
Week 11
It was decided that azmina and I would do the final video compilation and add voice over after sangeetha finishes the animation. Although we had to change our gantt chart, our work has been going on track overall and we are confident that our part would be done on time. However I am a bit worried about the interactive game and the flow of it, whether we need animations to make it work. Since we are not clear on the role of the computing students, our work for now is to wait and see what they say and adjust our work accordingly. If in the case that they are not doing the scripting for us, our final deliverables will change and we have to do an animation of how the interactive animation would go. This would be rather disappointing as our final output would not reflect our initial idea. Anxiously waiting to see how this would turn on out now.
Week 12
This week the animation video has been completed by Sangeetha. The final is edited by Azmina and myself by compiling it and adding the voice over. Just a few minor changes are to be made and we are good to go. We need some more pages to make sure the flow of the animation to the game works well. After consulting Mr.Mike we also added a landing page for two screens that would be shown before they start their animation and activity where they get to choose. The changes do reflect a better flow of the game and animation.
Week 13
Most of the screens we have are looking consistent however as per the feedback I realised that the colors may still be looking too repetitive when it comes to the corporate colors. The UI colors are clashing with the backgrounds and the new pages that are being created. However, since it is very minor changes, it does not affect major tasks and can still be adjusted. We are hoping to add some background music to the animation this week and render the final animation within this week and send over the file to the computing team as soon as possible. The assets for the game have been completed weeks ago and the only thing pending from Sangeetha, Azmina and my side is the animations and we will be handing over the file. The voice over of the animations are still echoey and since Azmina myself and Sangeetha was unable to make more changes we asked Aaron for help.
Week 14
Coming to the final week, it was tough since an animation work for our whole game activity has to be done for the final outcome, our final deliverables have changed and is rather disappointing. Our team is facing more work in the final week. The past 14 weeks have been overwhelming, yet fun. This project certainly has taught me a lot. Working with other collaborators is tough and managing everything together can be a bit complicated when there are a lot of miscommunications and different approaches from their supervisors. These lessons will certainly  be very beneficial for future projects. While this module has been fun, I am looking forward to delivering our final presentation and getting feedback from Petrosains, which will be the bow that ties all our hard work together. Hoping to have good feedback and satisfy our client and all our hard work paying off.
